The go-to guy for the Truex family is now two-for-two, in more than one way.
When Martin Truex Sr. wanted to get his older son’s racing career off on the right foot, he teamed with Mike Greci. And when it was time for the younger son to go racing, guess who got the phone call again?
“We’ve been family friends for a while,” Greci said. “I raced against Martin Sr., and I think when he got to the point where he wasn’t racing anymore, for some strange reason we hit it off well and I went over there to help with Martin Jr. I’ve been involved with the Truex’s ever since.”
That journey has taken him from the Truex family team that launched Martin Jr.’s career in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, to Dale Earnhardt Inc. in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and back to the East with Michael Waltrip Racing.
“I went to DEI with Martin Jr. when he went there to race for Chance 2 Motorsports, and then when Ryan wanted to go racing, Martin Sr. asked if I’d be interested in help move him along,” Greci said.
In his latest venture, Greci help Ryan progress from being a relatively inexperienced competitor, to the point where he is ready to take the next step.
“As long as they’re making progress, that’s probably the most important thing. Now obviously he’s ready to take the next step, and hopefully we’ve got him far enough along where he needs to be,” Greci said of Ryan.
In addition to achieving goals from a development standpoint, Greci was able to lead Ryan and the No. 00 MWR team to K&N Pro Series East championships in each of their first two seasons in the series.
Ryan will move on to the Nationwide Series for a part-time schedule in 2011. It was also announced today that Greci will remain with MWR’s K&N Pro Series East team next year and will work with their new development driver, Brett Moffitt.
