Coby Adds To His Legacy With Fifth Title

THOMPSON, Conn. -- Back in April, Doug Coby walked away from a wrecked race car without even completing one lap in the Icebreaker 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Six months later, Coby capped the season at Thompson by completing an unthinkable comeback to win his fifth NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship.

Sunday's fifth-place finish in the Sunoco World Series 150 was enough to completely erase his disastrous start to the season and wrap up his fourth straight title.

QUALIFYING: Dowling Tops Thompson Field

THOMPSON, Conn. -- Chase Dowling scored his first career 21 Means 21 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole award on Saturday at Thompson (Conn.) Speedway Motorsports Park. Driving the 15-40 Connection modified for Rob Fuller, Dowling posted a fast lap of 18.991 seconds (118.477 mph) around the 0.625-mile oval. Dowling was the only driver to break the 18-second bracket in qualifying and will make his 41st career start on Sunday from the top spot.

PRACTICE: Lutz Posts Fast Time at Thompson

THOMPSON, Conn. -- Craig Lutz posted the fastest time in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice on Saturday at Thompson (Conn.) Speedway Motorsports Park. Behind the wheel of the No. 46 Riverhead Building Supply Troyer, Lutz posted a fast time of 18.901 seconds (119.041 mph) around the 0.625-mile oval. Lutz enters Sunday's Sunoco World Series 150 looking for his first career series while driving for Russell Goodale.

Coby Makes Daring Pass To Get Past Bohn

CONCORD, N.C. - Sometimes when you don't have the best car a driver must rely on instincts and experience to get the win.

Defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby used both and it paid big dividends for the veteran at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The 38-year-old used lapped traffic in Turn 4 with 11 laps remaining in the 150-lap feature to get by Danny Bohn and win the Southern Slam 150.

QUALIFYING: Coby Scores Charlotte Pole

CONCORD, N.C. - Although the Southern Slam 150 is a non-points race, don't tell Doug Coby not to give it his all.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour points leader was able to slip by Danny Bohn to win the Coors Light Pole for the Southern Slam 150 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Milford, Connecticut, native, who is going after his fourth consecutive title and fifth in the past six years, finished with a fast lap time of 15.211 seconds (59.168 mph) to edge past Bohn (15.218/59.140) for the top spot and win the pole.

PRACTICE: LaJoie Leads The Way In Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. - Although it's been five years since he last drove a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour car, Corey LaJoie still knows how to go fast.

The former NASCAR Next driver was able to lead the field during final practice at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a fast lap of 59.332 mph in preparation for the Southern Slam 150 to be held tonight on the quarter-mile oval located on the front stretch of the track.
