LOUDON, N.H. – Eddie MacDonald drove around Steve Park for the lead coming out of Turn 4 to the white flag lap en route to winning the Heluva Good! Fall 125 Saturday morning at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The win gave the Rowley, Mass., driver a season sweep of the NASCAR Camping World Series East events at the 1.058-mile oval. He is the third driver to accomplish that feat, following Mike McLaughlin in 1992 and Joey Logano in 2007. MacDonald led four times for a race-high 60 laps.
"It's real great to come back and be able to do it again," said MacDonald following his fifth career wins.
Park held on for second, followed by points leader Matt Kobyluck. Matt Hirschman, making his NASCAR Camping World Series East debut, finished fourth, and rookie Austin Dillon rounded out the top five. Kobyluck leads second-place Dillon by 192 points with two races remaining.
"We're just one step closer to finishing this off," said Kobyluck. He was also third at New Hampshire in June and now heads to a pair of tracks (Dover and Stafford) where he has won at.
MacDonald led from lap 37 to 76 Saturday before giving way to Brad Leighton. Leighton appeared prime to collect his ninth NASCAR Camping World Series East win at New Hampshire before running out of fuel on lap 120. As Leighton came in to the pits, Park inherited the lead.
"When he ran out of gas, my crew chief said 'Don't get too excited, you pitted at the same time he did,' " Park said. "I went into fuel conservation mode right from when we pitted."
MacDonald, who pitted for the final time with 31 to go, tracked down Park with three to go and charged past a lap later. While Park was able to go the distance, Leighton wound up 22nd and Ricky Carmichael, who pitted out of third place with two laps remaining finished 16th.
"That was exciting towards the end," said MacDonald. "The car was real good on the outside the last 5-10 laps."
Joe Polewarczyk, Mike Olsen, Trevor Bayne, Bryon Chew and Jeff Anton completed the top 10. The race was originally scheduled for Friday, but moved to Saturday morning because of rain.
