DELAWARE, Ont. - For the second time in as many races, DJ Kennington topped the charts in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series practice. He worked his way around the half-mile oval in 19.015 seconds which works out to an average speed of 94.662 mph after leading the pack in practice two weeks ago at Autodrome St. Eustache.
Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/Mahindra Tractor Dodge), out of nearby St. Thomas, Ont., turned in that quick time on his 32nd lap of the session. He logged 37 laps overall.
The second-fastest car was that of Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) with a time of 19.039 seconds (94.543 mph). He was followed by defending series champion Scott Steckly (No. 22 Canadian Tire/Tow Truck in a Box Dodge), who timed in at 19.073 seconds (94.374 mph).
Rounding out the top five was Jason Hathaway (No. 3 Snap-on Tools/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge) with a time of 19.093 (94.275 mph) followed by Anthony Simone (No. 95 Crown Modular/United Lumber Chevrolet) at 19.160 seconds (93.946 mph).
Teams had a 90-minute practice session in the series' first visit to Delaware Speedway. The track was a regular stop for many years in the CASCAR days, but since racing under the NASCAR banner for the last two seasons Delaware was absent from the schedule. Arlen Scherba, now the sole owner of the historic venue, has made several renovations to the 57-year-old track making the return possible.
Qualifying for the Delaware 200 presented by Belfor Restoration Services is scheduled for 5:15 p.m ET. The green flag is set to be in the air at 8:30 p.m.
