PUEBLA, Mexico - The clouds cleared just long enough for Patrick Goeters to earn his first NASCAR Toyota Series victory of 2013 and fifth of his career.
Goeters, driver of the No. 43 Suspensión y Dirección/Husovarna Toyota, held off Daniel Suárez in a green-white-checkered finish for his first win since the 2011 season opening event in Monterrey. It's Goeters first victory on an oval, after earning his first four career wins on road courses.
Suárez, fastest in both practice sessions on Saturday, finished second for his third top three of 2013. He was followed by José Luis Ramírez, Homero Richards and Rodrigo Peralta.
Rubén Rovelo, Rogelio López, Rubén Garcia, Jr., Abraham Calderón and Hugo Oliveras completed the top 10.
Qualifying for the Puebla 240 at Autódromo Miguel E. Abed was cancelled due to intermitent rain on Saturday. Starting positions for the race were determined according to championship points.
Rafael Martínez and Antonio Pérez entered the weekend leading the championship standings, separated by three points. Pérez began the race from the top spot, but suffered car problems late in the race, finishing in the 31st spot. Martínez didn't fare much better, finishing in 28th. Both drivers fell to fifth and sixth in the standings respectively.
Suárez made the biggest jump among Desafio drivers, moving up four spots to third, one point behind Garcia Jr. who slots into second. Richards takes a five point lead hiding into Aguascalientes, the third event on the Desafio schedule and 13th race of the 15 race season.
