Hometown favorite Borja Garcia (#1 Alex Caffi Motorsport Ford Mustang) set the fastest lap time across the two practice sessions today in Valencia, Spain for the first event of the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season, while Gianmarco Ercoli (#9 Racers Motorsport Ford Mustang) posted the fastest lap in the ELITE 2 Division.
Garcia drove the #1 Ford Mustang fielded by former Formula 1 driver Alex Caffi around the 4.005 Km road course in 1:40,502, two hundredths of a second quicker than reigning Series Champion Anthony Kumpen (#24 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS), who led the day’s Final Practice session, and less than two tenths of a second faster than 2016 championship runner-up Frederic Gabillon (#3 Tepac RDV Compétition Ford Mustang).
Garcia’s fast lap was just .129 seconds shy of the 1:40,373 track record posted by Anthony Kumpen in 2016.
2015 ELITE 2 Champion Gianmarco Ercoli (#9 Racers Motorsport Ford Mustang) led the Junior Trophy competition with the fourth fastest time overall, while Freddy Nordstrom (#44 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS) starts the season posting the fifth fastest time, leading a trio of young NWES-bred talents: Salvador Tineo Arroyo (#56 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS), Stienes Longin (#11 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS) and Thomas Ferrando (#37 Knauf Racing Team Ford Mustang). Rodolfo Gonzalez (#2 Alex Caffi Motorsport Ford Mustang) was the fastest newcomer in ninth overall ahead of Christophe Bouchut (#66 DF1 Racing Team Chevrolet SS). Eric De Doncker (#98 Motorsport 98 Ford Mustang) led the Challenger Trophy with the 14th fastest time overall.
In the ELITE 2 Division, experience paid off as the fastest lap was posted by Ercoli in 1:41,196, who was followed Ulysse Delsaux (#31 McDonald's RDV Compétition Ford Mustang) and Thomas Ferrando, who led the first practice session earlier in the afternoon. Guillaume Dumarey (#24 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS) was fastest among the Rookie Cup contenders and ended up fourth overall, followed by another rookie, Felipe Rabello (#56 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS).
Eric De Docker was fastest in the Legend Trophy in sixth and edged Polish rookie Maciej Dreszer (#66 DF1 Racing Team Chevrolet SS). Marconi Abreu (#47 Brazil Team Ford Mustang), Justin Kunz (#11 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS) and Simone Laureti (#7 Racers Motorsport Ford Mustang) rounded out the top-10.
In her NASCAR debut, the Spanish newcomer Carmen Boix Gil (#1 Alex Caffi Motorsport Ford Mustang) posted the 12th fastest overall time, taking the lead in the Lady Cup classification.
Qualifying for the first event of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will begin Saturday at 10:00 am CET with the ELITE 1 Division and it will be streamed live on Fanschoice.tv and the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series Facebook page.
